Heritage, culture and traditions

Heritage

Muel contains a remarkable artistic and monumental heritage, proof of the different villages and cultures that settled in this emplacement throughout history. Some time ago, Romans were attracted to the richness of the land and to the irrigation possibilities of Huerva's river. There is a roman dyke that can be seen at the municipal park. The village preserves its medieval and urban mudejar structure, with narrow and winding alleyways, embellished and dignified by some palace-houses decorated with the typical brick galleries with remarkable examples of ceramic art.

However, the artistic lineage of Muel is not only focused on ceramics, in the municipal park there are some of the most important monuments like the hermitage of "Virgen de la Fuente" with work by the Aragonese painter Goya on or the castle "Los Marqueses de Camarasa".
St. Cristóbal church (1706- 18th century) is also singular because of its spectacular baroque altar. Maybe it was built as a result of the mandate of 1565 and if the place where the church was located wasn't big enough, someone searched for another place for the new construction. Baroque style with mudejar elements.

The building is formed by four naves with three stretches until arriving to the transept and semicircular vault. The cover is a barrel-vaulted ceiling in lunettes, with a wider central nave and vaulted gadroons in the apse, dome over pendentives with a lantern at the headland and edge vaults in the side naves, which are separated from the central part using cruciform pillars.

There is a high belfry on the entrance and the evangelists are represented on pendentives. Internally the style is baroque from the second half of the 18th century.
Numerous chapels can be seen in the sides with little depth were mentioned in 1771 during a pastoral visit.

In the choir, there's still an organ dating from 1696 which was built by an organist from Villa de Luna; the organ characteristics and the contracts are still maintained.

The façade is decorated with limestone pillars and high bell tower in brick, on the left side with its two first parts are square and the two upper ones are octagonal in shape.
